Abstract: Objective To evaluate the reliability and validity of the modified Edmonton symptom assessment system(ESAS) in the elderly patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis(MHD). Methods A total of 330 elderly patients(184 males and 146 females) who received MHD treatment in Blood Purification Center of Zhongda Hospital Southeast University from November to December 2023 were investigated by convenience sampling method. And the reliability and validity of the modified ESAS scale was tested. Results There were 11 items in the modified ESAS scale, and the correlation coefficient between each item and the total score was 0.60-0.77. Exploratory factor analysis showed that one common factor was extracted, and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 48.25%. The factor load of each item on the corresponding common factor was 0.60-0.76. The total Cronbach's α coefficient of the scale was 0.883, the Cronbach's α coefficient of each item ranged 0.866-0.880, and the broken half coefficient was 0.856. Conclusions The modified ESAS scale has good reliability and validity, and can be used to evaluate the symptoms of the elderly MHD patients.
