Abstract: Objective To explore the application effect of protection motivation theory (PMT)combined with failure mode and effect analysis (FMEA) in the safety management of the elderly in the nursing home. Methods A total of 80 elderly patients admitted to Nanjing Jiangning Muchunyuan Nursing Home from January 2019 to June 2020 were enrolled in this study. All subjects were divided into the observation group and the control group with 40 cases in each group. The control group received routine nursing model, and the observation group received nursing intervention based on FMEA and PMT. Both groups were treated for 3 months. The risk priority number (RPN), quality of life score, self-efficacy score, incidence of fall and nursing satisfaction were compared between the two groups before and after intervention. Results Before intervention, there were no significant differences in RPN, quality of life score and self-efficacy score between the two groups (P>0.05). After the intervention, the RPN of the two groups decreased significantly, and the scores of quality of life and self-efficacy increased significantly, especially in the observation group (P<0.05). After the intervention, the incidence rate of fall showed no significant difference between the two groups(P>0.05). The nursing satisfaction score was higher in the observation group than that in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusions Nursing intervention based on FMEA combined with PMT can effectively improve the quality of life and self-efficacy of the elderly, and show value in the safety management of the elderly in nursing home.
