Evaluation of the effectiveness of mobile pulmonary rehabilitation devices in elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complicated with ischemic heart disease

Abstract: Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy, compliance, and safety of pulmonary rehabilitation based on mobile health devices in the elderly patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) complicated with ischemic heart disease. Methods A prospective study was carried out in 70 patients with COPD complicated with ischemic heart disease. The patients were randomly divided into a control group (n=35) and a experimental group (n=35) using a random number table. In addition to conventional treatment, the two groups underwent different interventions: the control group received 12 weeks of self-directed pulmonary rehabilitation training, while the experimental group received 12 weeks of pulmonary rehabilitation training using a mobile pulmonary rehabilitation device. The pulmonary function indicators, such as forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), FEV1/FVC, percentage of predicted forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1%pred), and grip strength, 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) of the two groups were observed and compared. The scores of Berg Balance Scale(BBS), COPD Assessment Test (CAT), Seattle Angina Questionnaire (SAQ), Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA), Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) were assessed, and training compliance and safety were observed and compared between the two groups before and after the intervention. Results After intervention, the experimental group showed significant improvements in FEV1, FEV1/FVC, FEV1%pred, grip strength, 6MWD, and scores of the BBS, CAT, SAQ, HAMA, and HAMD scales compared to baseline, with all differences being statistically significant (P<0.05). In the control group, grip strength, 6MWD and SAQ scores also exhibited statistically significant improvements post-intervention (P<0.05). The experimental group demonstrated significantly longer 6MWD and higher treatment adherence than those of the control group, with significant difference (P<0.05). No training-related adverse reactions were reported in either group during the study. Conclusions Pulmonary rehabilitation using mobile health devices effectively enhances exercise tolerance and improves treatment adherence in COPD patients with ischemic heart disease.
