Abstract:
ObjectiveTo investigate the complications and longterm clinical outcomes of pacemaker implantation in elderly patients aged more than 80 years.MethodsConsecutive old patients with cardiac pacemaker implantation from December 1,2001 to December 1, 2007 at the Institute of Geriatric Cardiology were selected. Clinical characteristics, complications and longterm outcomes were compared between patients aged ≥80 years (very elderly group;n=60) and patients aged ≥65 years and <80 years(elderly group;n=60).ResultsClinical characteristics were not significantly different between two groups except age(P<005).The incidences of lead perforation and pain complication in the very elderly group were significantly higher than those in the elderly group(P<005).Improvement of symptoms and life quality, defect and complication of pacemaker, lead parameters after 1 year were not significantly different between two groups(P>005). The incidence of heart failure in the very elderly group was significantly higher than that in the elderly group(P<005).ConclusionsPacemaker therapy in the very elderly patients is safe and effective. More attention should be paid on lead perforation and pain after pacemaker implantation in the very elderly patients.
