Abstract: Sleep is essential for human physical and mental health, and about 40% of the global population is afflicted by sleep disorders (SD). This article reviews the impacts and mechanisms of environmental exposures such as noise, air pollution, light pollution, and electromagnetic radiation on sleep. It is found that the above environmental exposures can affect sleep through multiple pathways and increase the risks of related diseases. However, most of the existing studies are cross-sectional studies, and it is difficult to establish causality, and most of them rely on subjective measurement. In the future, basic research should be carried out to explore the specific mechanisms and consider the interaction effects of environmental factors to improve the understanding and prevention of SD.

Key words: environmental exposure, sleep disorders, noise, air pollution, light pollution, electromagnetic radiation
